Let's face it: if the future of pornography is going to be anything like the future of other film genres that once weren't taken seriously is now, then we can all probably look forward to a point in time - I don't quite know when- but when porn will probably finally be shot with actors and actresses who are actually good ...and also plot lines that are good as well. In our own time the idea seems preposterous, but it also seemed preposterous, in the 1950s and even up until the 70s, that horror films would wind up becoming as critically acclaimed as many of them now are. And I honestly believe this will be the case with porn.
It's very easy, for example, especially as a fantasy writer of all things, to imagine plots for porn that, before I started writing and really thinking about where plots could go (and just how many you can really have) probably would have sounded ridiculous to me. Now though they don't really, from a certain angle, sound ridiculous at all. If anything, many porn plots actually seem to sound more like the reality we're living in than your polite mind would allow you to believe. For example, in many fantasy films, or more especially the video games, there is always the concept of the quest or the missio some hero must go on in order to get something they want. Often times the quest is straight forward: In a mob movie, it might be that Tony has to successfully flip over a tractor trailer on the freeway, and in a fantasy it might be that the little halfling has to get a bucket of thirty magic strawberries. Ok. Now try to imagine the porn film that, in our own time, is relegated solely to the underground: Britney has to blow thirty cocks, if she wants to be allowed into the Kingdom of Ykysha. We will make them wizard cocks, just for the hell of it. And they are tasty too- why not?
Yet the crazy thing (at least to me) is that pretty much even trying to write about plots like these is essentially not permitted in our own time period. You can write about it but no one will find it "worthy reading". My question is why not? What is so different about it really, in relation to something like a vampire movie? How is it any more or less ridiculous? It's just another fantasy you understand ...nothing more or nothing less, and it can easily be incorporated into even a very high concept fantasy film that *later on* begins to delve into something non sexual (if you want it to) but that still relies on that initial opening ....that strange sexual opening. Yet it is not allowed ....oeriod.
And the one very big reason that I'm going to tell you I think it's ashame is because, as a writer and also as a human being, I can assure my reader that being under the influence of sex or wanting to have it et cetera is actually one of the best times that a writer can sit down and start writing. Many writers swear by the early morning for instance, where they start draining their thoughts the moment after waking, in between reality and the dream realm, and I have always sworn by that too, but there's also the sex realm which is really wildly inspiring but, you'll notice, almost never utilized In a shockingly great deal of literature. One enormous reason for this of course is because many of our most cherished classics - even recent books-- are almost entirely void of sex or even a hint of sexiness. Lord of the Rings is the perfect example: it's one of the most ridiculously fantastical worlds in existence ...yet it's somehow also impossible to even so much as imagine a hobbit slapping another hobbits ass, or giving a blow job, on and on. There is this idea that if we saw the characters like that they would suddenly lose all of their greatness, almost.
But I can assure you that if I only felt it was truly permissible I would say to hell with all of this and have my characters sexing or thinking of sex whenever I could, because I know that sex is like a fire, and once you let that train roll, other trains often start to roll as well. Again I can't stress enough how many stories ive allowed myself to begin with sex...only to then meet the most extraordinary characters after the sex. Other times however, I go back to the old terrible habit (like when I start thinking of writing something publishable again) and I won't allow myself the free reign of sex and....bloop. I close down. It's harder to write.
I don't know. I just think it's ashame I suppose.
SEX!
